Waltzing Matilda

Okay, I recently discovered that you don't have to form a raid group and enter the Icecrown Citadel raid instance to purchase your T10 gear.  There's a cute little dwarf in Dalaran who will be happy to take your emblems and tokens and hand you your T10.

Matilda Brightlink is a mail armor merchant and she can be found in the armor shop between the fishing fountain and the South Bank in Dalaran.  This is the same shop where we purchased our other tier gear.  Why the same dwarf, who we've been going to this whole expansion, couldn't sell the T10 is beyond me, but there you go.

Have a great weekend folks!

Zod's Fixed

Blizzard released a list of in-game fixes, which included Zod's.  You may once again kneel before Zod.  You can read the official link here.
"The proc on Zod’s Repeating Longbow should no longer reset auto shots."

Zod's Bugged

"Zod's should not reset your autoshot. This is a bug."
This is what Ghostcrawer posted in response to reports that the proc on Zod's Repeating Longbow is resetting our auto-shot timer.

Essentially what this means is you'll be losing out on the number of auto-shots that you should be getting during the course of a fight.  Enough in fact, to negate the benefit you get from the proc.

Given the lack of stats on this weapon the heroic TotC ranged weapons will probably get you more dps until this is fixed.  I'm not sure how the dps compares to other ranged weapons.

If you have this fine weapon, just know you aren't getting all of the dps out of it that you should.

I wouldn't kneel just yet.

A Primer on Deadly Boss Mods

Here you go folks, a primer on how Deadly Boss mods works. I'm going to assume that you've downloaded and installed the mod.

Okay, so in case you hadn't noticed we're fighting Koralon the Flame Watcher from VoA (you know the jerk who throws fire underneath you and then gives you T9 gear when you win).

1. DBM Timer Bars - DBM has a variety of countdown timers it displays in the form of animated bars. By default these bars appear on the right, but I've customized DBM for me and put them on the left.

In the screen shot above we can see that Koralon will be casting meteor fists in 14.2 seconds. We also can see that we've got 3:57 seconds to get him down or he'll enrage. Go, go, go!

2. Critical Warning -
DBM does a great job you letting you know when bad things are happening to you. In this case the jerk through threw fire underneath me. Note that this text warning comes with an audio warning as well (Run away little girl twisted ).

The important thing to realize is that the warning is in giant blue text right in the center of my screen (this is by default, right out of the box, no assembly required). Seriously if you have DBM there is no excuse for dying in the fire.

3. Spell Timer. As events get closer to happening DBM will move the timer bar from the left (see item 1) and put it in a more central location. Please note that I have customized my DBM for me.

The point is DBM attempts to put this important information in a place where you can see what's about to happen.

In the above screen shot the jerk is casting Burning Breath. No big deal because the healers all have DBM, saw that it was coming, and were ready for it.  Right healers?

4. Boss is Doing Something. Again this is another alert in big text in the center of your screen. In this case it's reminding us that the boss is casting Burning Breath.

DBM_Tutorial_1

In this second screen shot I wanted to point out some additional DBM warnings.

1. Raid Warnings. Here you'll see two warnings for Meteor Fists. The first one that reads "Meteor Fists in 5 sec." appeared on the screen about 5 seconds earlier letting us know meteor fists was coming. The text right above it is now the Meteor Fists event happening. The five second warning message is about to drop-off.

2. Boss is Doing His Thing. Okay, I'm not 100% sure that this one is a DBM message. It may actually be a Blizzard message built into the encounter. Still that's a lot of warnings for Meteor Fists, which explains why our tanks never die from it because the healers have DBM and are always prepared.  Right healers?

3. Chat Warnings. Finally if all those spell timers, audio warnings, and giant text in the center of our screens wasn't enough, DBM broadcasts all of this to our chat window as well.

So that's basically it, DBM is designed to provide lots and lots of information regarding these raid encounters. Each encounter will have it's owns set of alerts, but the basic placement of these alerts is pretty standard.

If you have a free moment, I encourage you to go into the DBM general options and run a test mode. This will give you samples of it's alerts and warnings. It only takes about a minute to run.

RUN AWAY LITTLE GIRL!!

I Can Haz Raid Awarenezz

Today I'm going cover one of the very basic skills needed for raiding and that's Raid Awareness.  For those on a tight schedule there is TLDR version at the end of the post, however, if you still find yourself dying in fires, please read the whole thing.

What is Raid Awareness?

If you've ever been on an unsuccessful raid you've probably heard someone utter the phrase, "Raid Awareness People!" While no one wants to get called out for not performing, raid awareness is one of the fundamental skills necessary for successful raiding.

So what exactly is raid awareness? Simply put it's the ability to perform your class function while executing the mechanics of each boss encounter.

Tunnel Vision
One of the biggest mistakes novice raiders make is having tunnel vision. Usually this affects healers most because they have all those health bars to worry about, but it can be a problem for dps and tanks as well. Tunnel vision is where you focus on performing your class function and are oblivious to the events happening around and to you. Unfortunately tunnel vision usually leads to your death, and possibly a wipe.

Keeping you alive is not just the responsibility of your helaers. The bottom line is you can't dps, tank or heal when you're dead. While it's important to perform your class function, it cannot be prioritized over the other events happening both around and to you. If you're going to die in an encounter you want it to be from things that were completely out of your control, and not from things that could have been avoided. When you die in a fire, or void zone, that is something that could have been avoided. An example of bad luck or uncontrollable death was Koralon the Flamewatcher when it was first released. It was possible for fire to spawn underneath you and have Burning Breath applied to you at the same time. Nothing you could do about that, and it has been fixed so it can't happen anymore.

Developing Raid Awareness
So how do you develop raid awareness? First you need to become familiar with the mechanics of each encounter, and be ready for any buffs, debuffs and abilities the boss might throw at you. In the same way you watch the cool downs on your abilities you need to be watching for things like fire, adds, special abilities, etc.

For example, in the Lord Jaraxxus fight random raid members will get the Legion Flames debuff. You may get it, or you may not. You should go into the encounter assuming that you will get it. Not only should you assume that your going to get it, but you also need to be thinking about how you're going to handle it. If you're not sure how best to handle something ask the raid leader for advice. The success of the raid should not be dependent on the right people getting affected by debuffs.

Becoming Self Reliant
Perhaps the single greatest thing you can do is learn to be self reliant. You'll be amazed at how much better you do if you are able to recognize key events and react to them before the raid leader calls them out. When the guild was first learning the Heigan encounter I attempted to follow others during the dance phase because I didn't know where the safe spots were. More often than not I would die because I was too slow to move. Ultimately I realized that in order for me to succeed I needed to learn where the safe spots were on my own. It took a few tries but eventually it became old hat.

Having an addOn like Deadly Boss Mods installed, and learning how it works can make a world of difference.  The great thing about DBM is that it's good to go right out of the box with no assembly required. It has timers, audio warnings, and displays information in big type in the center of your screen.

In the Twin Valkyr fight DMB displays a timer that shows you how long until the next significant event. When I see the timer get to about 6-8 seconds, I know to position myself next to a portal in case I have to changes essences. When the event does occur DMB plays an audio warning and displays a big message in the center of my screen telling me which event and which essence I should have.

Raiding is a team effort and these fights take a lot of coordination and a little luck. Bad things happen and even the most proficient raiders make mistakes. The big thing is to understand what mistakes were made and how to fix them.

The days of the pure "tank and spank" encounters are long gone. Every fight is a gadget fight that involves adds, crap spawning on the ground, crap falling from the sky, and generally a who lot of movement and running around. The good news is that these encounters are scripted and it's the same adds, the same crap spawning on the ground, the same crap falling from the sky, and the same movement and running around. We have the ability to learn and adapt, the NPCs don't. At least not yet.

TLDR Version
  • Understand that your class function is not your only job in raids.
  • Everyone has a responsibility to stay alive. It's not just the healers job to keep you alive.
  • Know the fights and anticipate what might happen before you start.
  • Become self reliant.
  • Bad things happen, we all make mistakes, but we need to fix those mistakes too.

Echoes of Doom: A Look Back

I'm a couple of days late on this one, but oh well.  Today I'm going to take a quick trip down memory lane, for it was on October 14, 2008 that patch 3.0.2 Echoes of Doom was launched.  This of course was the pre-cursor to Wrath of the Lich King.

It's hard to believe that it's been a year already, but here we are. Some of the general highlights included,
  • The Achievement system
  • The Barber Shop
  • 51 point talents
  • Stormwind Harbor
  • In-game calendar
  • Mount and Pet changes
  • Massive nerf of existing raid bosses
Overall hunters received one of the biggest overhauls of any class, and we've been evolving (and in some cases devolving) ever since.

Auto shot was fixed so it wasn't clipped by Steady Shot, which meant we could throw away our silly spam macros.  We got the awesome Kill Shot, and the not so awesome Freezing Arrow.

We got additional stable slots and pets got their talent trees.  That meant no more running around taming throw away pets just to learn a new rank of Bite.

The patch introduced exotic pets and Beast Masters smiled as the stomp, stomp, stomp of their Devilsaurs and Core Hounds literally shook the screens of anyone around them.

Speaking of Core Hounds who doesn't remember standing in line to tame the Kurken in the cave by Azuremyst Isle, or having a go at taming Uvuros.

Of course it was also the birth of Gorilladin and the short-lived Rhino Bowling.  I remember running down to Un'Goro and taming Lightbrew, the white gorilla who fought by my side as I leveled in the snows of Northrend.

It's been a fun and very fast moving year of this expansion, and I'm amazed at how much fun I'm continuing to have playing my hunter.  The content in Outland seemed to get old very fast, but for some reason Northrend still seems new fresh.  Maybe when I've pried Frostmourne from Artha's cold dead hands will it start to get old, but I doubt it.

Happy Hunting!

Long Overdue

Well this was long overdue, but satisfying nonetheless.  Phase I and II are crazy easy now, but those drakes are still a pain in the rear.

Champion of the Frozen Wastes

The Blizzard Wayback Machine

As I'm sure all of you know Patch 3.3 is currently on the PTR. Once again it seems that Blizzard is cranking out a steady stream of content and doing it faster than ever. After all Patch 3.2 only just arrived on August 4th.

I was curious to see if Blizzard is on a faster track for delivering content for this expansion than they were with the Burning Crusade, and if so just how fast?

Today I'm going crank up the Wayback Machine and compare Burning Crusade's patch releases with Wrath of the Lich King's.

I only focused on the major patch releases and not the minor ones.  I also know that patch 3.0 was released on the October 15, 2008, but decided not to include that.  As you can see, however, the length of time between patches for this expansion is not that dramatically different from what was done in Burning Crusade.

Now I don't think there's any argument that the amount of content Blizzard has been pushing out for the expansion pack is greater than what they did for TBC.  Every one of Wrath's patches has been similar to what we saw in 2.4.  From that perspective Blizzard has certainly improved.

Major Patch Timeline

The big question now is what's next after 3.3 and when will it happen?  While we can certainly expect a few 3.3.x patches, I'm pretty sure that Blizzard isn't looking to do a 3.4.

It wouldn't at all surprise me if patch 3.3 were to be released right around the holidays.  If the expansion were to be released in November 2010 (which fits in with the Blizzard time line), then we'd be at almost a whole year with just patch 3.3.  That just seems way to long an interval to go without a major content patch.

Let's speculate with some arbitrary dates.  If patch 3.3 were to drop on December 15, 2009 and Cataclysm were released on November 9, 2010 (both Tuesdays of course) then that's 329 days between major content patches which is about 98 days longer than patch 2.4 and the release of Wrath.  Now maybe Arthas will be that tough, but I doubt it.

So maybe Cataclysm beta in February 2010 with release sometime in June?  I'd be happy with that.

Happy Hunting!

P.S. - patch release dates were taken from wowwiki and not gathered through any official Blizzard source.

I'm not a big achievement guy, but there are a couple in the game that really speak to me, and this was one of them.  I started planning for this a year ago back when patch 3.0 was on the PTR.

By the way the clothing required for the Disturbing the Peace achievement functions the same way as badge gear, meaning once you buy it there is a a one hour period in which you can sell it back for a full refund.

As far as getting the Violet Protodrake goes, like I said, I'm not a big achievement guy.  Maybe next year ;)

WoW: Cataclysm Confirmed

Let's face it, despite that fact that a lot of this information was leaked, it's still exciting to get the official announcement. Yes, boys and girls our addictions are safe!!

Here's a link to the official WoW Cataclysm site. You can view the trailer and more. I'm sure they'll be a ton of details forthcoming throughout the weekend. But it looks like the old is becoming new.

Some things that were mentioned in the video are,

  1. Worgen for the Alliance and Goblins for the Horde (both can be hunters).
  2. Many of the old world zones will undergo major changes.
  3. Flying in Azeroth.
  4. Old Dungeons becoming heroic (Deadmines and Shadowfang Keep were mentioned).
  5. A secondary profession called Archeology (no details, but since it's secondary everyone should be able to get it).
  6. A new type of leveling system.
  7. Guild leveling and achievements.
Anyway, it's exciting news to be sure. I'm sure you'll get to here us talk about it on the next episode of the Hunting Party.

Well I'm off to see if I can free up a character slot or two (no mention if we'd get more).

It's a 3.2 World and We're Living in It

My baby hunter recently ding'd 77 so it's now time for me start thinking about life at level 80. When Darkbrew hit 80 it was the start of a long journey running heroics and working on Northrend reputations.

Having leveled a hunter to 80 once you would think this might be a rinse and repeat, but patch 3.2 changes everything.

Level 80 Day One

One of the first things I'm going to do is head over to the Argent Tournament and start running Trial of the Champion normal mode. I'm surprised they didn't just have us equip our lances and drop a pinata down from the ceiling for us to whack.

In normal mode there are four nice pieces of gear that drop, and there's no lockout for normal which means you can run this over and over again until you get everything you need.

I will also start running this in heroic mode. Heroic drops ilevel 219 gear which is equivalent to Ulduar (10). In fact I think there might be an upgrade or two for Darkbrew in here (sad I know). There are six pieces of hunter gear in heroic. Remember that heroic does a have a lockout so you can only do this once a day.

In addition to Trial of the Champion I'll also run some other heroics for gear and badges. Utgarde Keep is still good for the Plunderer's Helmet and Drake Mounted Crossbow (you can't expect the True-aim Long Rifle to drop right away).

Nexus is also another good one for the Sphere of Red Dragon's Blood. There are other three other items that drop in here too, not to mention it's a 5-badge run.

Now that people are starting to out gear the earlier raid content I'll probably try and find an Obsidian Sanctum (25) run. The Hyaline Helm of the Sniper and Fury of the Five Flights (lol, good luck getting that one) are nice drops.

Now if you're flush with gold you can hit the Auction House and pick-up some very nice items. Some of these won't come cheap, and you'll find it's a mix of entry level to "best in slot".

Legs

Back

Ranged

Rings

Neck

Wrist

Waist

Trinket

Before you start spending all that gold keep in mind that you'll be earning conquest badges and there's a lot of nice gear that you'll be able to get quite easily. For example, The Broach of the Wailing Night only costs 19 badges.

Then and Now

So how does hitting level 80 today compare to hitting level 80 back in December? It's quite nice actually. I went ahead and plugged some information into Zeherah's Hunter DPS Analyzer (you can here an interview with her here) and compared Ranchero (pre-raid) with Darkbrew (pre-raid and current). Here are the bottom line dps results.

As you can see gearing up just from Trial of the Champion and a few affordable AH pieces puts you ahead of where you could have been before 3.2.

For details on how I spec'd and geared each one you can click on the links below. Darkbrew pre-raid matches the gear I had when I first stepped into Naxxramas. Darkbrew current is my current gear, and Ranchero is geared in items that I thought I could reasonably get in a short amount of time.
It's a 3.2 world and we're living in it!

Patch 3.2 Day One

Busy day today so here's a quick list of some things I was able to once my realm came back up last night. Love having new stuff to do.
  1. Found out what it would be like if my realm was only available from 8:30 pm - Midnight.
  2. Went to the Jewelcrafting shop to get epic gems. I think we set a Guinness world record for the number people that could fit in there.
  3. Had a guildie come by and drop a train set in the Jewelcrafting shop.
  4. Bought two of the same jewelcrafting patterns thanks to massive lag.
  5. Enabled all my addons despite many of them not functioning.
  6. Bought the heirloom chest piece for my alt. hunter.
  7. Smiled at having an AH in Dalaran (I may not give up Eng. now).
  8. Ran the new 5-man instance in normal mode. Great place to bring a fresh 80 to get geared up.
  9. Tried to farm the Jeeves schematic. No luck yet.
  10. Threw a 10-man group together for the Trial of the Crusaders. Neck-humping Kobolds FTW!

Jewelcrafting - Getting Ready

First things first, I'm back from my second vacation. It was a great trip and if it weren't for the timeshare folks it would've been perfect (that's a story for another day). I discovered something about myself, I may be an idiot, but at least I'm not a fool, but I digress.

A couple of months back I picked up Jewelcrafting so I could cut my own gems and take advantage of the awesome jewelcrafter only gems. I took a quick glance at some of the 3.2 changes on the PTR, and today I want to share some of the Jewelcrafting changes and what they mean for me, and possibly you.

First here are the important changes.
  • Epic gems and recipies have been added to the game.
  • The stats of the jewelcrafter only gems have been increased. The delicate dragonseye now has +34 agility up from +27.
  • The jewelcrafter only gems are no longer prismatic. For example the delicate dragonseye is now a red gem.
  • Epic gems can be purchased with Emblems of Heroism.
  • Epic gem patterns can be purchased with tokens earned from the daily jewelcrafting quests.
  • Epic gem patterns require jewelcrafting 450.
So what does this all mean for me? It means I have work to do.
  • I will have to do some re-gemming. I'm currently using the jewelcrafter only gems to satisfy my meta-gem requirement.
  • I will probably add a Deadly Ametrine and Shifting Dreadstone to my gear in order to keep my meta gem active.
  • I will then upgrade any available sockets to Delicate Cardinal Rubys.
  • With my current gear I'll probably gain about 20 more agility, but I'll be sacrificing some socket bonuses.
  • I'll need to work on getting my jewelcrafting to 450.
  • I'll also want to make sure I do the daily jewelcrafting quest each day so I can buy the patterns I want (I want all of them by the way).
  • I'll also be doing more heroics to stock up on Emblems of Heroism so I can purchase some epic gems. Remember that when 3.2 hits we'll be earning Emblems of Conquest, and while they can be converted to Emblems of Heroism, I'll probably want to keep them to get Conquest gear.
When patch 3.2 hits you can bet that a lot of folks will be looking to upgrade their gems. In addition to gemming myself, I'm hoping to cash in on the early demand.

So the bottom line is if you're a jewelcrafter you might want to start collecting badges and earning tokens to get the new patterns and gems when 3.2 goes live.

Ranchero: Heya Dark.

Darkbrew: Who the heck are you?

Ranchero: I'm your level 70 alt. hunter, Ranchero.

Darkbrew: Oh yeah. How do you like those heirloom items I got you?

Ranchero: They're pretty sweet, thanks.

Darkbrew: Cool. So, um where are the 34 cobalt bars you were supposed to send me?

Ranchero: Um, about that. There seems to be a small problem.

Darkbrew: What problem. You go to a mailbox, type in my name, drag the bars to the slots and click send.

Ranchero: I know. It's the type your name in the box that's the issue.

Darkbrew: Really? You just put me on your friends list and start typing my name and auto-poplulate takes over.

Ranchero: This is true, but you're not on my friends list.

Darkbrew: >.<

Ranchero: Although we're in the same guild, there are several toons whose names start with Dar, assuming that's what I typed.

Darkbrew: So where did they go?

Ranchero: I have no idea. They haven't been returned yet either.

Darkbrew: I needed those to make ammo.

Ranchero: I know. Speaking of which, when I hit level 72 I'll be able to use the engineering ammo, so I'll need you to make me some.

Darkbrew: Get off my blog!

How Hunters Think

So the time has finally come for me start leveling one my alts. Now in no way am I tired of my hunter. I still love playing him, and raiding with him.

What I am tired of are daily quests and the Argent Tournament. So rather than do something productive with my time on nights that I'm not raiding, it's time to try something different.

So which class and spec? Well the obvious choice would be another hunter and I do have one who is now level 70, but I've opted to level my Shaman.

Previously I was elemental, but I've switched to enhancement. Why?
  1. He wears pretty much the same gear as my hunter so I know where to get it.
  2. He has pets. Granted they don't last very long, but then again on some encounters neither do hunter pets so it works out to be about the same.
In essence he's the melee hunter I've always wanted. I'm looking forward to this.

Training Week

The work gods have banished me to training this week (some sort of project management stuff).

Although you wouldn't think that this would interfere with my ability to blog, it does. On top of that my wife is going away again this weekend, so I need to help her get ready, as well as find time to raid, and of course watch the season finale of Lost.

Basically I won't be blogging much this week. Consider yourself spared.

In the meantime if you happen to be progressing through Ulduar and want some Hunter tips, head over to OutDPS, Euripides has written some nice Hunter guides on Ignis, XT-002 and Razorscale.

"With all due respect, sir, I believe this is gonna be our finest hour."
- Gene Kranz, Apollo 13

The trip is back on! Soon my wife will be on a plane with her friend, and I'll be home for three days with a pack-filled WoW agenda.

So what's the plan?
  • My wife leaves on Thursday so that's pizza night.
  • We have Friday off which means burgers at 5 Guys for lunch.
  • Friday night is 25-man Naxx night one.
  • Saturday afternoon raiding. I can't remember the last time I hopped in a raid during a Saturday afternoon. Even if it's just 10-man Naxx it's still nice.
  • Saturday is steak and Longboard Lager night. I might even eat something green, who knows.
  • Saturday night it's Ulduar 10-man. We did "loot" Leviathan last week, now it's time to delve in deeper.
  • Sunday is Brinner followed by 25-man Naxx night two.
I love being married, but it sure is nice to have a few completely independent days every now and then. And yeah I'll start to miss her by Sunday, be excited to see her on Monday, and wonder when her next trip is by Tuesday. Thus is the circle of life.

"Houston, we have a problem."
- Jim Lovell, Apollo 13

I was sitting at my desk today when my phone rings. It's my wife calling to let me know that, in a fit of paranoia (you know the whole Swine flu thing), she and her friend were calling off their planned trip to California this weekend.

On the outside I was naturally supportive. On the inside it was as if I just lost the Envoy of Mortality to a Rogue. Three whole days of bad food, beer, raiding, staying up late, and sleeping-in all vanished in an instant.

I was even going to have Brinner. /cry
